1954 Flxible - Harran Transit of West Babylon, NY

Dear Bernie:

As requested, here are some pictures of the 1954 Harran Flxible taken by me on Friday, December22, 2006. This is 8 days after Harran completely shut down operations. I believe that this bus was donated, sans NYS License Plate to the MOBT.

For what it is worth, the Harran yard in West Babylon, was either sold or leased to Penske/Hertz Truck Rentals.

Regards,

Alan

Beautiful Flixible Clipper. As a member of the MOBT I hope the Flix found it's new home at the MOBT. There is also one like this Flix in the Pacific Bus Museum collection.

Am looking for information on the Airline bus company that ran from San Francisco to Los Angeles in the 40's & 50's over a back route. They used Flxible Clippers.

My father drove a GM "old look" city bus in Bloomington, IL. It was the short version, perhaps a 25' or 35' length. I remember it looked stubby compared to the other lengths. Seems it only had one entrance/exit door up front. Anyone know if either 25' or 35' had a rear side door like the 40' versions?

@Gordon Martin I'm not sure at all, but the Airline Bus Service may have been a forerunner of AirporTransit, which ran late Aeroporters and Starliners with 3-71 Detroits all over So Calif to serve all the major airports. They went belly up sometine in the mid '70s. I ran many fog runs for AirporTransit back in the days when the old ILS would shut down every airport in the southern end of the state. AirporTransit was a die-hard Flx operator which also ran Hi-Levels. Going to 4107s, due to their high cost, finished them off. The Starliners were the perfect size and economy for them, but the GM's broke them.

@Gordon Martin I should mention that AirporTransit was yet another bus/cab operation of the huge Tanner operation out of LA. Tanner started downsizing in the '60s, spinning off unprofitable services, and collapsed after the old man died. AirporTransit then bought GMs, and the whole works went belly up. Tanner Gray Line was famous for their Crown "deck-and-a-half" Skyline tour buses in the '50s.
